Met up with Mr Bennett today for a ride, some 40 or so miles up to Nutley, Chelwood Gate, Horsted Keynes and then back round Lindfield to good old Slugwash. Plotted in somewhat of a hurry so hadn't checked all the elevations and had thrown in a nice down and up when we weren't expecting before Lindfield! Still, Nutley had been a breeze, so we powered on to conquer all today.

Where on earth does a name like Slugwash Lane come from? Doing some hunting on interweb, I find this: ' The first element of the name is derived from 'slough' which gives an idea of the condition the lane would be in during the wet months of the year.' Ok, all explained then. Picture is of the lane.

Thinking back on today, there was a moment when I might have missed the ride. Going down to the Ashcombe roundabout to meet up, some nut on a powerful motorbike thrashing it round the bend from the lights got a twitch on and was no more than 2 or 3 inches from clipping the kerb and coming straight on at me. Total idiot. Holding myself back from any generalisations as I know some bikey people, but this one won't live long.

Back to the ride. It was a lovely day out today, so I thought let's go short sleeved top. Just about warm enough, ok in the sun, in the shady lanes not so hot, but persevered.

One for the Garmin freaks here. I know Ross was having problems with Garmin plotting up Fletching High Street yesterday and I had the same problem this morning. For some reason Garmin refused to treat it as a road. There are ways of plotting the course anyway by taking the tick off of 'stay on roads' but it was odd.

Still not fallen over yet. It will happen I am sure. This day in 7 weeks, we will have done the first stage, 77 miles of climbing in Cornwall. Check the route profile under the Day 1 Route, brutal.

Now, where is my purple comb?
